Area youths recognized by Monroe County

Congratulations to the following students from the  Towns of Sweden, Clarkson and Hamlin who were honored at the Monroe County Awards Ceremony for the 2022 Young Citizen Award and the nominees for the Willie W. Lightfoot Youth Advocate Awards. This award ceremony was established by the County Legislature as one of the highest honors for youth and adult leadership, community service, advocacy, and perseverance.

Evan Miner – Evan approached his local church on creating a tranquility base/sensory room. This room was designed to create a space dedicated to allowing all ages to feel calm, supported, and focused.

Nathan Bushnell – Nathan approached the Clarkson Town Board with plans to build park benches with and without planters. Nathan built 14 benches that were placed in the Clarkson Town Parks and four planter benches that were placed at the Clarkson Veterans Park and the West Clarkson Cemetery.

Jeffrey Xue – Founder of the organization called the East Coast Food Conservation Organization (ECFCO), which started out with collecting apples that were being wasted in the cafeteria at school and redistributing them to school and community organizations. The organization has since expanded to include a full food shelf in the high school. Jeffrey also oversees the local community garden.

Sarah Bonisteel – Sarah volunteers with ECFCO, which maintains the Brockport Community Garden and high school food pantry for high schoolers. She has also volunteered at the Food Link Pop Up food pantries at the high school. Before the pandemic, she was also a frequent volunteer at the Elementary School book fairs and in helping with the Middle School locker clean out program at the end of the year with PTSA.

It was an honor to recognize these future leaders for their exceptional achievements and their dedication to making a difference in our community.
