Monroe County partners with BusPatrol for school bus safety initiative

Monroe County has selected BusPatrol – the world’s most deployed stop-arm enforcement technology provider – to implement and manage its school bus photo enforcement program. This critical public-private partnership is a win-win for student safety in a no cost effort to deter the illegal passing of stopped school buses across the County.

All 23 school districts within Monroe County will have the opportunity to have their school buses – whether district-owned or contractor-operated –equipped with advanced safety technology, including AI-powered stop-arm cameras to detect the license plates of vehicles that fail to stop for school buses. The technology, installation, and maintenance are provided at zero cost through BusPatrol’s violator-funded program.

The program is poised to go live next year and will be preceded by a robust education and awareness campaign to remind motorists of the school bus stopping law in New York State and teach children safety tips for riding the bus.

“Thanks to our partnerships in New York State, we are seeing a positive change in motorist behavior around school buses, but there is still work to be done,” said Jean Souliere, CEO and Founder of BusPatrol. “98% of people who receive a ticket from a stop-arm safety program don’t receive a second. We’re proud to partner with Monroe County on this important initiative to make roads safer for our kids.”

Earlier this year, the National Association of State Director of Pupil Transportation (NASDPTS) announced that the rate of school bus illegal passings is at an epidemic level. Survey results suggest that school buses are illegally passed more than 41.8 million times per year in the United States. In New York State, school buses are illegally passed 50,000 times each school day, putting children at risk as they step on and off the bus.
