Several law enforcement partners have been working together to form a stolen vehicle task force. Their mission is to prevent car thefts, recover stolen vehicles and catch car thieves. The task force, consisting of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Rochester Police Department, Gates Police Department, Greece Police Department, Irondequoit Police Department, East Rochester Police Department and Monroe County Probation, has been conducting details across Monroe County since July. The task force members unwavering efforts led to 14 felony arrests, seven misdemeanor arrests, 21 warrant arrests, 102 traffic citations, and the recovery of 11 stolen vehicles.
Some notable cases:
•On July 27, 2023 at 9 p.m., members of the task force located a stolen 2014 Nissan Rogue. Originally stolen on June 4, 2023, the vehicle was used in multiple retail thefts throughout Monroe County, including earlier that day in East Rochester. Undercover units followed the suspect vehicle to an address in the City of Rochester. In a coordinated effort, task force members surrounded the parked stolen vehicle and detained two suspects. Both were charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree and remanded to the Monroe County Jail. One of the suspects had an active MCSO warrant for Petit Larceny and a warrant for Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree from Ontario County.
•On August 10, 2023, task force members located a stolen 2020 Kia Forte and attempted to stop it. The four occupants bailed out of the vehicle and tried to run. Task force members, with the help of Rochester Police officers, quickly detained and identified all four as juveniles. Two 16-year-olds are charged with Unlawful Use of a Vehicle in the Third Degree. A 14-year-old and 15-year-old are charged with Criminal Possession of Stolen Property in the Third Degree and Unlawful Use of a Vehicle in the Third Degree.
•On August 17, 2023, a 911 call came in for a man down on the ground near Conkey Avenue and Northview Terrace. A deputy assigned to the stolen vehicle task force happened to be in the area and located the unconscious man. The deputy quickly assessed he was overdosing, administered Naloxone, and the man began breathing again. Although not related to stolen vehicles, this is something first responders are doing on a daily basis in our community.
The coordination, communication and collaboration of the personnel assigned to this task force has led to the recovery of several stolen vehicles and the arrest of the individuals responsible. There are numerous other cases similar to these that resulted in arrests.
