DANCE/Hartwell includes graduate and undergraduate choreography

The Department of Dance at SUNY Brockport presents performances of DANCE/Hartwell on Thursday, October 26, through Saturday, October 28, at the Hartwell Dance Theater in Hartwell Hall on the Brockport campus. All performances begin at 7:30 p.m. Ticket prices are $17/general, $12/seniors, SUNY Brockport alumni, faculty and staff, and $9/students and are available online at fineartstix.brockport.edu, by phone at 585-395-2787 or at the Tower Fine Arts Center Box Office, 180 Holley Street, Brockport.

Under the direction of professor and department chair, Carlos R. A. Jones, this year’s DANCE/Hartwell features dance works by budding and mid-career choreographers within the undergraduate and graduate dance program in the Department of Dance. Themes of self-empowerment and negotiating societal expectations are the common threads weaving through the evening’s works. Undergraduate Annika Winters’ choreographic work investigates the consciousness of knowing one’s purpose in life.

Also on the program is “Fantoccini Leon,” choreographed by graduate student Mark E. Holland with an original composition by staff accompanist Leon Hsu. This delightful yet haunting work suggests we all contemplate the puppet-like strings that society places on us and consider how we might clip those strings of manipulation to see our personal truth. Additional student choreographers include Heather Boorman, Kiera Unverzagt, Iyana Voltaire, and Anna White. DANCE/Hartwell will showcase group and solo choreography followed by a talk back with the choreographers after each performance.
