Finger Lakes Boating Museum announces new boat building workshop series
The Finger Lakes Boating Museum in Hammondsport will host a boatbuilding workshop series from January to August. Participants will construct a replica 9-foot Penn Yan “Aerodinghy” over seven two-day weekends. This boat, manufactured for many years by the Penn Yan Boat Company, is a 9-foot rowing dinghy. This series is structured to teach the skills of pattern layout and cutting, milling wood pieces, wood bending, planking, canvassing, and marine painting/varnishing.
This series is a unique opportunity for anyone who wants to learn how to build a boat from scratch or simply learn some woodworking techniques. There are no age restrictions to take the course. A maximum of eight people are invited to register for each workshop in the series.
Finger Lakes Boating Museum first offered this series in 2014 when the museum opened its doors. In 2024 the Museum will celebrate its tenth year in Hammondsport, and as part of a year-long celebration is once again offering this workshop.
Ed Wightman will instruct the series, assisted by Pat Smith and Brent Rauber. Wightman said, “This course will be an engaging and educational workshop. This series is a great opportunity for all skill levels to learn how to work with wood and build a boat.”
The admission price will be $450 for FLBM members and $500 for non-members for the entire course or $65 FLBM members/$75 non-members per workshop. Registration is open now. Call 607-569-2222, email info@flbm.org, or visit http://www.flbm.org/boat-building-workshop-series.
The Finger Lakes Boating Museum exists for the education and preservation of the rich history of boating activities and boat building in the Finger Lakes Region of New York. The FLBM is a membership-based, volunteer-driven, family-oriented organization.
