Prime Time Brass struts into Brockport for February 2 concert

Just before they depart for New Orleans for Mardi Gras festivities, Prime Time Brass will make their way to SUNY Brockport for a concert on Friday, February 2, at 7:30 p.m. The brass ensemble will be playing their special blend of big band jazz, pop, New Orleans-style second-line show-stoppers, as well as some patriotic numbers. The concert will take place at the Tower Fine Arts Center, 180 Holley Street, Brockport. Ticket prices are $17 general, $12 for senior citizens, Brockport alumni, faculty, and staff, and $9 for students, and are available online now at http://fineartstix.brockport.edu. The physical Tower Box Office will reopen on Monday, January 29, when tickets will be able to be purchased by phone at 585-395-2787, or in person.

Founded in 2005, Prime Time Brass has won multiple titles in the world of drum corps competitions and has performed internationally, playing to crowds from Toronto to New Orleans, and east to west, as well. They are known for their sizzling brass, amazing showmanship, and outrageous crowd interaction. Whether on a stage or marching down a New Orleans street, Prime Time Brass is a premier band that is a highly respected member of the community.

Closely associated with New Orleans, a second line is a community that plays music, dances, and sings to celebrate shared joys and shake off shared burdens. Mardi Gras celebrations are high season for second lines, but they can form at any significant event throughout the year, from weddings to festivals to protests. At the front of the procession are the main line or first line, the band, and the people at the heart of the event, whether that’s a wedding party or the members of a social club. Behind them comes the second line, which gives the whole event its name – these are the general attendees and the crowd that had assembled spontaneously during the walk.
