Souper Bowl V held in Sweden

About 160 hungry folks were looking forward to the soup tasting at the Sweden-Clarkson Recreation Center on Saturday, January 20. Listening to conversations on site, they weren’t disappointed.

The event, which was sponsored by the Sweden Senior Association, Inc. (SSAI) and staffed by 40 member-volunteers, raised funds for producing and donating quilts and sleeping bags (300 per year), dresses and knitwear to help those in need in Rochester area hospitals, battered women’s shelters, nursing homes and foreign countries. The Sweden Senior Singers, who perform at area locations, also benefited from the Souper Bowl proceeds.

Who wouldn’t want to sample hot soup on a winter day? Many, many thanks to the following eateries who made it possible by each donating two gallons of their delicious signature soups for the occasion: 58 Main, Brockport (broccoli cheddar); Abe’s, Spencerport (bacon cheddar burger); Brockport Diner, Brockport (Italian wedding soup); Corona’s, Brockport (chicken tortilla); The Dakota, Hilton (chicken vegetable); Farmer’s Table, Hamlin (autumn harvest w/wild rice); The Grove, Kendall (New England clam chowder); Java Junction, Brockport (Brazilian black bean); Jimmy Z’s, Brockport (Italian wedding soup); Krony’s, Hamlin (vegetable beef barley), Mill House, Clarkson (stuffed pepper soup); Piccolo Fazool’s, Brockport (chicken pastini); Sam’s Diner, Holley (beef with vegetable) and Tim Horton’s, Brockport (hearty chicken noodle).

Each Souper Bowl V ticket holder had one vote to choose their favorite soup. The top three winners were #1 Bacon Cheddar Burger from Abe’s; #2 Chicken Tortilla from Corona’s and #3 Brazilian Black Bean from Java Junction.

Several donors contributed to Souper Bowl V, including Walmart, Wegman’s, Jim Whipple (apples), Chet Fery (rolls), McDonald’s, Wendy’s and Burger King.

The proceeds from this event benfited the Sweden Senior Association, Inc. (SSAI) for senior programs and making contributions to local charities and two scholarships for Brockport High School students.
Organizers hope to see everyone back again next year for Souper Bowl VI.
