OBITUARIES – WEEK OF MARCH 17, 2013

AREA

•Ressman, Dorothy Evadene (nee Harrison), age 90, of Tonawanda, died March 1, 2013. She is survived by six sons, C. Roger (Barbara) Ressman of Spencerport, Robert O. (Bernardine) Ressman of Fairfax, Virginia, James T. (Wendy) Ressman of Bon Aire, Georgia, Dennis A. Ressman and Gerald L. (Kelly Marcaccio) Ressman both of Tonawanda, and Scott A. Ressman of Cleveland, Ohio; a former daughter-in-law, Janet (Streeter) Matyevich; and one sister, Thelma (Paul) Murray of Kenmore. Dorothy is also survived by ten grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren, and was the beloved aunt, friend and “adopted Gramma” to many. Her husband, Charles R. Ressman, preceded her in death on June 19, 1976. Dorothy was a sixty-plus year active member of Salem United Church of Christ in Tonawanda; a 27-year employee of the City of Tonawanda School District, retiring in June of 2003; and a “kindergarten grandmother” in the North Tonawanda School District. She received the Tonawanda Educator’s Award, a Rotary International Paul Harris Fellow, and the 2007 U.S. President’s Volunteer Service Award. She was the past President of the Shakespeare Club of the Tonawandas.

A Celebration of Dorothy’s Life was held March 6 at Salem United Church of Christ, Tonawanda. Private interment in Acacia Park Cemetery. BERGEN

•Briggs, Helen D., March 10, 2013, age 93. Predeceased by her husband of 43 years, Donald Briggs Sr. (1986), and son Thomas Briggs (1995). Survived by sons, Donald Jr. (Leila) Briggs of LeRoy, James (Rosemarie) Briggs of California; sister, Betty Fersaci of Florida; sister-in-law, Eileen Alexander of Romulus; two grandchildren, Lindsey (Chad) of New York City, Martin of California and one great-grandson, Leif of New York City; many nieces and nephews.

A Rite of Christian Burial was held March 14 at St. Brigid’s Catholic Church, Bergen. Contributions can be made to the Byron-Bergen Public Library, 13 South Lake Avenue, Bergen, NY 14416 in her memory.

 

BROCKPORT

•Hermance, Paul J. Sr., on March 6, 2013 at age 85. Predeceased by his wife, Dorothy, his parents George and Mary and two brothers. He is survived by his children Paul Jr., Patricia (Jim) Sorel, Kathleen (Dave) Sime; grandchildren, P.J. (Monica) Hermance, Beth (Shane) Cenci, Lynn Sorel, Jimmy Sorel, Katie (John) Mc Jury, Jenna (Dave) Hoenk; great grandchildren, Braeden, Molly, Maggie and Nicholas; brother-in-law, Donald Jones; nieces, nephews and many dear friends.

A Funeral Mass was said March 11 at Nativity Church BVM, Brockport. Interment, private. Contributions can be made to Nativity Church or Hospice of Rochester in his memory.

 

•Kodiak, Teresa May (Egloff), March 10, 2013, age 41. Survived by her husband, Christopher; her parents Helen (Kress) and Edward Egloff; brothers and sisters, Rose Egloff, Edward (Sarah) Egloff, John Egloff, Alexander (Mary) Egloff, Mary (Patrick) Lewis, Benjamin Egloff, Margaret (Matt) Liebert.

Her Funeral Mass was said March 16 at St. Leo’s Church, Hilton. Interment, Fairfield Cemetery, Spencerport. Contributions can be made to Brockport Area Vets Club, 222 West Avenue, Brockport in her memory.

 

CHILI

•Pfenninger, Raymond E., March 10, 2013. Predeceased by John J. Fedele. He is survived by his mother, Grace Fedele; loving companion, Christine; his children, Kimberly (Deb) Pfenninger and Jeffrey (Heidi) Pfenninger; grandchildren, Erin, Paige and Jacob Pfenninger; sister, Judith (Ted) Eadie; nieces, nephews and Chris’ children and grandchildren.

•Bell, Arthur F., Suddenly, February 28, 2013, age 61. He is predeceased by his sister, Donna Fedele. He is survived by his wife, Mary Duffy; his children, Shane and Amberlynn Bell; his parents, Arthur Bell and Virginia Foos; brothers and sisters, Connie (Gary) Clymo, Dale, Ken (Joanne), Lloyd (Cheryl), Gary (Joan), Doug (Jeannie) Bell, Audrey (Paul) Woodcock, Melody Bell and Jeff (Tracey) Bell; brother-in-law, Red Fedele; and sister-in-law, Carol Bell; many nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service was held March 13 at Hilton United Methodist Church. Interment, Parma Union Cemetery.

 

•Cacia, Susan, (Bowen) “Suzie,” died unexpectedly on March 7, 2013 at age 51. Predeceased by her father, Harold Bowen, and her dear friend Gail E. Meyer. She is survived by her husband of 26 years, Joseph Cacia; her children, Ryan Cacia Montanus, Danielle Cacia, John Cacia and Melissa Cacia; her mother, Sayo Bowen; her brother, James Bowen; Neil and Audrey Montanus; and her three beloved pugs; Yoshi, Ming-Lee, and Chin-Lee. Sue is also survived by extended family and many, many, dear friends.

A Service will be held at Lakeview Community Church, 30 Long Pond Road, Rochester, NY 14612 on Sunday, March 17 from 3 to 6 p.m. Donations can be made to The Norman Howard School, Attn: Development, 275 Pinnacle Road, Rochester, NY 14623 in her memory.

 

•DePalma, Joseph “Joe Da Cook,” Peacefully, March 9, 2013 at age 68 after a short but courageous battle with cancer. Predeceased by his father, Joseph V. DePalma and mother Beatrice Silvio DePalma. He is survived by his wife, Judy Ann; his sons, Joseph C. and Anthony L. (Paula Hallowell); his daughter, Melissa A. Coppini (Alan Ward) and by his most beloved grandsons, Anthony L. Coppini III and Joseph G. DePalma; his sisters, Carmen Schlenker, Patricia DePalma; sister-in-law, Marianne Lazzaro (Robert Bialecki); many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends; best friends Vito, Gary and Dave. Joe retired from Whirlwind Music Distributors after 30 years where he was the Plant Manager. He was a Past Fire Chief of the Mumford Volunteer Fire Department.

A Funeral Mass was celebrated March 13 at St. John the Evangelist Church, Spencerport. Entombment, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. •Gursslin (Doud), Josephine A., Peacefully, March 8, 2013, age 90. She is predeceased by her husband, Alvin; brother, Leon Doud; granddaughter, Carrie Marie Gursslin and great-granddaughter, Mya Gursslin. She is survived by her children, Roy (Donna), Earl (Kathy), Larry (Carol), Dennis (Mary), Glen (Penny) Gursslin and Joyce (Robert) Kita; sister, Louise Breunis; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; special cousin, Beverly Evans; sincere and best friend, among many, Lorraine Oakden; several nieces and nephews. Josie was born in Hilton and was a longtime resident.

A Time of Remembrance was held March 12 at the Thomas E. Burger Funeral Home, Hilton. Interment, Parma Union Cemetery. Donations can be made to Lifetime Care Hospice in her memory.

 

•Hill, Richard W., March 9, 2013, age 92. He is predeceased by his wife, Lois M. Hill. Survived by his children, Diane (Jim) Towsley and John (Karen) Hill; his grandchildren, Richard Towsley, Peggy Sealander, Timothy (Mary) Towsley, Cindy (Eric) Bostley and Kevin (Michelle) Hill; eight great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren; a sister, Betty Brule; a niece, Kathy (Gary) McSweeney.

•Reynolds, William F. “Bill,” March 8, 2013, age 57. Predeceased by his parents, Francis and Myrta Reynolds. Survived by his adopted mother, Lucille Wilfeard; brother, John (Debra) Wilfeard; a nephew, Matthew Wilfeard; very close friend, Carla Ruggles; one aunt and several cousins.

•Segovis, Barbara J., March 12, 2013, 79. Predeceased by husband, Howard C. Segovis; brother, Charles “Skip” Rinere; sister and brother-in-law, Lorraine (Jack) Kavanagh and son-in-law, David A. Pack. •Smith, Michael Thomas, age 63, on March 5, 2013 from GBM (brain cancer). Survived by his wife of 35 years, Jean (Elmer); son Brian Bickersmith (Sara); daughter Colleen; granddaughters Violet and Mira. Also survived by his mother, Ruth; siblings, Janice Barney, Beverly (Marty) Mihalenko, Al (Margaret), Donald (Kim), Gary (Linda); mother-in-law, Mary (Art) Salvione; siblings-in-law, Margie, Bill, Cathy Raksha, Maria Elmer, Dolores (Tony) Gratto, Lucy Sulkowski; nieces, nephews, extended family, friends, and his four-legged best friend, Charlie.

•VanDekken, Frances J. (DePede), March 8, 2013 at age 57. Predeceased by her parents, Flora and Dominic DePede; father-in-law, Cornelius VanDekken. Survived by her husband, Stephen VanDekken; daughter, Sara VanDekken; son, Stephen (Lori) VanDekken; grandchildren, Amealia, Aydan, Abby; mother-in-law, Shirley VanDekken; sisters, Janet DiMora, Mary (Butch) Lont, Clara Vigelette, Annabel (Tom) Tambe, Lucy (Michael) Jason; sisters-in-law, Valerie Barker, Judy Wandtke, Sandy (William) VanDerveer; nieces and nephews, special friends, Ursula Brown and Michael (Jean) Madigan.

•Harrigan, Linda L., March 3, 2013 at age 68. Linda is survived by her husband of 48 years, James D. Harrigan; three daughters and one son; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren. Linda was pre-deceased by her daughter, Donna.
