Herman J. Bowman, Ed.D

•Bowman, Herman J., Ed.D, of Orchard Park, New York,  age 87, formerly of Spencerport and West Falls, NY, died February 24, 2014, after a brief illness. Born June 9, 1926 in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, to Della (Fisher) and Herman J. Bowman, brother to Gertrude (Kurt) Kenney, Evelyn (late John) Tucker, Orrin (Mary Alice), Clifton (Margaret), and the late Harold (Priscilla) Bowman. He is survived by wife Doris J. Gutekunst, beloved companion since 2002, and by five children, Lynn (William) Mahone, Jennifer (Steve) Perry, Dr. Wayne (Kathy), Scott (Clara), and James (Karen) Bowman. For 54 years Dr. Bowman was blessed in marriage to Carolyn Lee before her passing in 2001. He is also survived by 15 grand and 10 great grandchildren.

He was a World War II veteran, U.S. Army 42nd Infantry. Dr. Bowman began his career in public education in 1950 as a science teacher at Amherst Central High School. He was appointed principal at Orchard Park Junior High School in 1959. He received his masters and Doctorate of Education from the University of Buffalo and was appointed Assistant Superintendent of East Aurora Schools (1967), serving later (1975) as Superintendent of Schools until 1985. Upon retirement he served as Associate Professor of Teacher Education at Roberts Wesleyan College for an additional ten years.  He was an active member of the Wesleyan Church of Orchard Park, and while living in Spencerport, Pearce Memorial Church in North Chili.

A Community Interment service was held March 21 at North Chili Rural Cemetery. A Memorial Service was held March 22 at Wesleyan Church of Orchard Park. Contributions can be made to the Wesleyan Church of Orchard Park or to Pearce Memorial Church in his memory.
