Center for Workforce Development offers training to meet need for skilled workforce

Over the next five years, it is estimated that more than 16,000 jobs will go unfilled in the region due to a lack of qualified candidates. These jobs are known as “middle skills” jobs, which require more than a high school education but not a four-year college degree. Often well-paying, these jobs are found in the skilled trades, healthcare, computer support and professional office career settings, among others.

These jobs are available to those with the right skillset, whether young adults or older adults looking to change careers. Successful completion of a qualified job training program, such as those offered by the Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Center for Workforce Development (CWD), can open the doors to many of these positions.

According to Barb Harte, Employment Counselor at CWD, “Employers recognize the quality of our programs, and those who complete our full-time training programs are often able to find a job within six months. In fact, many of our programs have an 85% or better post-completion employment rate.”

Harte notes that the programs at CWD are designed to accommodate the adult learner and respect their need to balance school with other areas of their lives. “We work with them to identify any potential barriers, and help them determine how to overcome those obstacles in order to achieve their goals,” notes Harte. “When they succeed, we succeed.”

Those interested in one of these programs should begin by attending a free information session. Offered weekly, these hour-long sessions include details about adult career full-time training programs in the areas of: Information Technology Careers (Computer Support Specialist), Skilled Trades (Building Maintenance and Technology, HVAC/R, Machining with CNC Fundamentals), Medical Careers (Dental Assistant, Nurse Assistant/Home Health Aide, Phlebotomy & Lab Services), and Professional Office Careers (Medical Office, Legal Office, Administrative/Business Office). Advisors also review the enrollment process and any financial aid options specific to each program.

More information on the available training programs and upcoming information sessions can be found on the website atwww.monroe2boces.org/cwd or by calling 585-349-9100.
