Operation Safe Stop builds awareness among motorists for student safety

The Spencerport Central School District hosted this year’s Operation Safe Stop on Thursday, April 27 at Cosgrove Middle School. The event, held in partnership with New York Association for Pupil Transportation (NYAPT) and Rochester Area Transportation Supervisors Association (RATSA), raised awareness of the dangers of motorists passing a stopped school bus.

Local authorities from the Ogden Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s deputies, and New York State Police Troopers, along with elected leaders, NYS Senator Joseph Robach, NYS Assemblyman Peter Lawrence, Monroe County Sheriff Patrick O’Flynn, Ogden Supervisor Gay Lenhard, and Spencerport Mayor Gary Penders attended the event. In addition, Gates Ambulance and the Spencerport Volunteer Fire Department participated with OPD and bus drivers to conduct a re-enactment of a pedestrian bus accident.

As many as 50,000 motor vehicles illegally pass New York State school buses every day. Motorists must always stop for flashing red lights, even on divided and multilane highways and on school grounds.
