Canal View Elementary honors veterans

On Wednesday, November 10, Spencerport’s Canal View Elementary School invited local veterans and members of the Ferris Goodridge American Legion to attend a showing of the work students put into commemorating the poppy, which is associated with veterans of all wars and conflicts.

Shelley Remillard initiated the various programs at the request of the Legion Auxiliary’s poppy committee. Upon her retirement, art teacher Debra Rogala took the proverbial ball and ran with it. The results were that the entire school, including Principal Denise Lemcke, all teachers, staff, and of course the industrious students, rallied together to create the display of items commemorating the poppy, its symbolism, and why it is worn proudly during the month of May.

Legion Auxiliary member Judy Lockwood said, “It is very heartwarming to see the enthusiasm of this next generation as they learn about patriotism, realize what their family members may have gone through, as well as countless young Americans, both men and women, who were willing to fight to preserve our freedoms.”
