Holley third graders meet Rochester pen pals in person
This year, Hayley Cerasuolo’s third graders from Holley Elementary School formed a unique connection with third graders in Scott Hunsinger’s class from Dr. Walter Cooper Academy School 10 in the Rochester City School District. These two classes held virtual “get to know you” meetings via Zoom, shared lessons, and learned about each other, their communities and interests. From there, each student was paired up with another student from the other district and classes participated in writing lessons to compose letters that were mailed to each other. This is the first time the school districts have partnered for this activity.
On Friday, June 9, the pen pals had the opportunity to meet in person for the first time. They enjoyed an outing to Holley Falls and Canal Park and had a chance to play games, including kickball, and connect with each other face to face. Lunch was provided by Jimmy Z’s Plates & Shakes.
“It’s been a great learning experience for everyone,” said Brian Bartalo, Holley Central School District Superintendent. “The kids are so excited! We hope to be able to do this activity again in the future.”
“The kids absolutely loved writing letters to each other,” said Cerasuolo. “They really enjoyed sharing their favorite things and learning how much they have in common. They were so excited to get their letters and write back to their pen pals. I am so glad we had the opportunity to participate.”
