Artistic director Carlos R. A. Jones has curated a program of innovative work by members of the internationally renowned Brockport dance faculty. This year’s DANSCORE showcases James Hansen’s new post-modern work, “Slight Lines,” which explores tension through the manipulation of space and audience perspective. Also featured is Jenise Akilah Anthony’s restaging of her work “Feral” as well as the resurrection of “Diary of a ‘Simple Bitch,’” a Sankofa favorite created by past guest artist Aviance Bain. Kaley Pruitt Dance, under the artistic direction of assistant professor Kaley Pruitt, returns to Brockport via a dance film entitled “Nonlinear.” Pruitt also shares a new work set on undergraduate BFA majors that investigates the embodiment of different aspects of loss. Rounding out the concert is Jones’ jazz work “Rooted Between the 6 and 7” and a series of Senegal and Mali dancers staged by guest artist Marie Basse-Wiles. Generously supported by DanceForce, Basse-Wiles’ residency convened dance majors from SUNY Brockport’s Department of Dance along with dancers from Western New York’s dance communities. They will perform “Danza, Sunu, and Sabar” at the Saturday, November 18, performance only, with an encore presentation during the Spring 2024 Sankofa production.
