CTE students shine at SkillsUSA regional competition
Monroe 2-Orleans BOCES Career and Technical Education students’ skills were in full effect on March 5 at the SkillsUSA NY Area 1 Regionals. BOCES 2 CTE students medaled in 11 competitions, earned honors in three additional and took home a regional officer position.
Two BOCES 2 CTE students placed first in their respective competitions. Dental Assisting student Le’Asijah Bullard (Greece) earned gold in Action Skills while Outdoor Powersports Technology student Tommy Auer (Churchville-Chili) garnered the top spot in Small Engine Service Basic.
Seven BOCES 2 CTE students finished in second place across four competitions. Individual wins were garnered by: Dental Assisting student Isabella Goosey (Hilton) in Action Skills; Digital and Visual Communication student Avery Monsees (Spencerport) in Advertising Design; and Baking student Madison Baird (Wheatland-Chili) in Commercial Baking. Four BOCES 2 CTE students earned a second-place team win in Quiz Bowl: Digital and Visual Communication student Erin Newton (Spencerport); Dental Assisting students Thiara Morrobel-Moreta (Greece) and Melana Tobin (Hilton); and Heavy Equipment Operation and Maintenance student Ryan Williams (Brockport).
Additionally, four third-place victories were won by BOCES 2 CTE students: Introduction to Construction Trades student Maddox LaJuett (Brockport) in Carpenter’s Assistant Basic; Criminal Justice student Ariel Travis (Gates Chili) in Criminal Justice; Culinary Arts student Keith Wyatt (Gates Chili) in Food Prep Basic; and Dental Assisting student Nivea McInnis (Greece) in Prepared Speech.
Adding to the top finishers were three BOCES 2 CTE students with fourth-place finishes: Culinary Arts student Wayquill Wynn (Gates Chili) in Culinary Arts; Medical Laboratory Assisting and Phlebotomy student Kennedy Johnson (Greece) in Job Interview; and Digital and Visual Communication student Faith Waver (Gates Chili) in Photography.
Also at the regional competition, Medical Laboratory Assisting and Phlebotomy student Savannah Wehner (Spencerport) was named New York State Area 1 Vice President.
The next step in SkillsUSA competitions is the New York State SkillsUSA Competition held in Syracuse at the end of April.
