Eagles, Bees deadlock 0-0
by Warren Kozireski
Byron-Bergen goalkeeper Kristen Bailey made 12 saves and Kendall’s Jorden Ammerman 11 stops as the Bees and Eagles tied 0-0 in girls soccer.
Each team traded chances over the first five minutes of the first half as Byron-Bergen junior Allison Richardson was stopped on a point-blank chance in the third minute and Kendall senior Nicole Browe shooting wide right one minute later.
In the 53rd minute, Browe was thwarted by a sprawling save by Bailey and, eight minutes later, Bees senior Shawna Adams sent a through-pass to Richardson, who missed the left post.
The best scoring chance of the game came in the 70th minute as Kendall’s Shelby Reis’ direct kick from 25 yards out glanced off the crossbar.
Byron-Bergen had three scoring chances in the first overtime as freshman Kelsey Maurer hot wide twice under pressure and a Maurer corner kick was headed over the crossbar by Adams in the 88th minute.
The second overtime featured Kendall chances as a Browe breakaway was broken up by Bees’ defender Michelle Lovett and she missed wide both right and left in the 95th and 96th minute, respectively.
“We were seeing where we had space and tried with through-ball passes,” Kendall head coach Pam Beres said about her team’s overtime adjustments. “Both teams played even for 100 minutes through hard work.”
“We have to learn to be flexible with only15 players,” Bees head coach Jennifer Faro said. “We changed our front in the overtime because the players said to try this—it’s good that they are starting to learn the game and make decisions for themselves.”
