Strauss goal propels Cadets

by Warren Kozireski

Freshman Allyson Strauss scored off a goal mouth scramble late in the first half as Hilton defeated host Brockport 1-0 in girls soccer.
In the 36th minute, Stephanie Herbert hit an arcing corner kick to the far side of the box. Alexandra DiVasta found Alicia Mrzywka, whose shot was blocked with the rebound lying just inside the goal line. Strauss knocked it in for only tally of the game.
Brockport threatened first in the 23rd minute as Brooke Falsion passed to Katie Johnson, whose shot was punched away by Hilton goalkeeper Vanessa L’Abbate. On the ensuing corner kick, Delaney Voorheis’ attempt was headed wide by Isabella Ekese.
The Blue Devils had another opportunity early in the second half when Courtney Hunt chipped an indirect kick over the wall, but the ensuing shot was stopped.
Hilton came close to taking a two goal lead in the 64th minute as Lindsay Pelcher threaded a perfect through-pass to Courtney Robinson, but her shot was knocked aside by a diving Allison Danielak in the Brockport goal.
The Blue Devils pressured and almost tied the contest in the final minute when a Hunt free kick found Johnson down the left side, where she used her left foot just inside the goal-line to send a pass right in front, but Brockport couldn’t connect.
“We only had four returning seniors and it took our juniors a little while to understand our system, but we are solid defensively,” Hilton head coach Steven Sorenson said about his 2-1-2 team.
L’Abbate made seven saves in picking up her second consecutive shutout and run her consecutive shutout minutes streak to 180+. It also was the third career shutout for the sophomore, who earned her first as an eighth-grader.
