Cadets, Blue Devils claim first wrestling crowns Gross, Ferris named Coach of the Year

Five Hilton wrestlers won Section V weight class championships and three others were runners-up as the Cadets won their first Section V AA wrestling title in this, their 54th year. Three Brockport competitors won to lead the Blue Devils to the Class A championship.

Yianni Diakomihalis, the DePrez brothers – Lou, Vincent and Anthony – plus Dan Norris each won in the finals while teammates Hobie Strassner, Mike Spallina and Harold Juergens each finished second. Austin Hertel, Kyle Anderson, John Fuino and Joe Fuino all finished third to lead the Cadets to 275.5 team points. That was 71.5 points better than second place Webster-Schroeder.

Diakomihalis won via pin in 3:19 at 106 lb. followed by Lou DePrez taking a 7-4 decision at 138 lb. Vincent DePrez registered an 18-2 technical fall at 145 lb. and Anthony DePrez followed with a fall in just 31 seconds at 152 lb. Norris took a 4-3 decision to win the 182 lb. match.

Diakomihalis and Anthony DePrez were named Co-Outstanding Wrestlers and the Cadets Kevin Gross was named Coach of the Year.
In Class A, Blue Devils senior Ryan Mattison won the 285 lb. match with Cody Anders (99 lb.) and Bart Peters (126 lb.) also victorious as Brockport netted 248.5 points. Spencerport finished second with 201.5.

Mattison won a 3-1 decision in the final, Anders won 12-5 and Peters 8-6. Blue Devils teammates Mike Marchetti, Spencer Mulligan and Cameron Calderelli all finished second in their respective weight classes while Troy Ferris, T.J. Rowe, Matt Inscore and Austin Mesiti each was third.

Spencerport’s Tahj Eaddy took a 107 decision to win the 138 lb. match. Kyle Pittman (152 lb.) won the final 9-5, Kyle Melnyk (160 lb.) squeaked a 3-2 decision, Collin Pittman (182 lb.) won via fall in 2:21 and Trent Egenlauf (195 lb.) also won via fall in 1:24 for the Rangers. Teammates Tyler Mitchell, Mike Wicks and Brandon Barrett finished second and Phil Wicks was third.

Egenlauf was chosen as Most Outstanding Wrestler while Brockport’s Mike Ferris was chosen as Class A Coach of the Year.
In Class BB, Byron-Bergen finished second with 179.5 points led by a class championship by Danny Khomitch (160 lb.), second place finishes by Alan White, Hunter Taylor and Brendan Marsocci and a third by Austin Yockel. Holley’s Kevin Avery also finished second at 152 lb. and Brandon Morrell, Nick Shenck, Dan Flanagan and Martin Beadle to help the Hawks to a fourth place finish with 147.5 points.
