St. Paul Sabres take home league crown

This year’s St. Paul Lutheran boys basketball team went one step further than their predecessors by defeating a tough Hillel (Brighton) team, to clinch a league title.

Last year, the St. Paul boys fell to Hillel after winning the WYNCSAA league title. This year the Sabres overpowered their opponents with an up-tempo offense and pressing defense.

Led by high scoring guard play from Damon Montgomery with 20 points and David Stirpe with 19 points, the Sabres were able to fend off Hillel, who overcame a 16 point first quarter deficit to take the lead with just a couple of minutes remaining. Ryan Kubanka anchored the Sabres with 25 rebounds.

The Sabres were 11-1 in league play, 15-2 overall. Next the Sabres head to Albany this weekend to compete in the Lutheran Schools Basketball Tournament at Our Savior’s Lutheran School. The Sabres will be graduating five eighth graders in Stirpe, Kubanka, Jacob Crossan, Joe Kemp and Ben Young, but have a talented group of fifth graders ready to step up.

St. Paul Lutheran School, located in Hilton, serves students in preschool through 8th grade.
