Saints closing in on first undefeated season

Churchville-Chili outscored Gates-Chili 13-5 in the first half and cruised to an 18-10 win to run their record to 12-0 with four games remaining in trying to become the first in Saints boys’ lacrosse history to go undefeated in the regular season.

The Spartans opened the scoring after holding the ball for the first 1:40 of the contest, but that lead was short-lived – 12 seconds to be exact – as sophomore Jacob Buck took a pass from Dan Bonafede and scored.

That was the first of eight consecutive tallies for the Saints as Buck netted four more goals with AJ Soto, Jason Tebo and Corey Yunker each adding one during the run.

The second quarter was Patrick Sheridan’s turn as he netted a hat trick over the 12 minutes with Tebo and Austin Orengo each scoring once to put the Saints up 13-5 at half-time.

Buck added a pair of goals and Tebo one in the low-scoring third quarter before Bonafede and Tebo closed out the scoring with fourth quarter markers.

Buck finished with seven goals and two assists, Tebo four goals and one assist and Sheridan three goals while Yunker had a team-best six assists with his one goal. Senior goaltender Matt Cobb made 17 saves in net.

The Saints were listed as Class B Honorable Mention in the May 9 New York State Sportswriters Association Top-20 boys’ lacrosse poll despite being one of only three undefeated teams in the division. The other two were ranked first and second.
