Spring college sports honors announced
•St. John Fisher shortstop Mike Roman (Spencerport) was named to the New York All-Region First Team for his accomplishments this year. The senior closed out his career first in Fisher’s career record book in games played with 171, tied for second in hits with 215, tied for fifth in doubles with 39 and fifth in RBIs with 123. His 76 hits this season tied a single-season record, while his 210 at-bats this year are both a career-best and a single-season record. He also was named First Team All-Empire 8—the third straight season he has made the conference honor roll.
•Hilton grad Scott Eisenmenger was named Third Team All-Region at first base for the Cardinals. His 10 home runs this year tied him for first on the team and ties the single-season record. His 18 home runs for his career currently ties him for first on Fisher’s career list. The sophomore’s team-leading 56 RBIs is a single-season record and he ranks third in doubles for a single-season with 19. Last year’s Empire 8 Conference Rookie of the Year was named First Team All-Conference this year. Defensively, he had a .991 fielding percentage that places him first on the team this season.
•Hilton grad and Potsdam junior Jordan Ott was named second team All-Northeast Region and First Team All-SUNYAC in softball. The shortstop led the Bears with a .387 batting average, 36 runs scored, a school single season record 48 hits, 11 doubles and 24 RBI. Ott led the conference with 30 walks and became the Bears all-time hits leader with 121.
•Nazareth College senior defender Kayla McKay (Churchville-Chili) was named First Team All-Empire 8 in women’s lacrosse. The four-year starting defender for the Golden Flyers led the team with 21 caused turnovers in 2016. She also ranked second in ground balls with 31 and third in draw controls with 33. She also scored her first career goal in a win at Houghton on April 27.
•Mercyhurst College long-stick midfielder Shane Endres (Hilton) garnered All-ECAC First Team men’s lacrosse honors while junior attacker Derek Richards (Hilton) was named All-ECAC Second Team. Endres, now a two-time All-ECAC Second Team player, ranks second on the team in caused turnovers (18) and third in groundballs (36). Richards ranks second on the Lakers’ roster in both assists (13) and points (32). He has scored 19 goals.
•Mercyhurst College women’s lacrosse junior midfielder Carly Zimmerman (Churchville-Chili) was recognized on the All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Second Team. She appeared in 17 games totaling 39 goals and 10 assists for a total of 49 points, ranks second on the team in goals and third in points. Zimmerman also tied for second on the squad with 18 caused turnovers, third with 31 groundballs and third with 45 draw controls.
•Genesee CC sophomore midfielder Mike Caternolo (Churchville-Chili) was named to the Men’s Lacrosse All-American Second Team as the Cougars won the national championship. The career leader in ground balls (275) and face-off win percentage—winning better than 69 percent of the face-offs he took (437 for 626)—he collected 24 ground balls in a game against Hudson Valley CC on April 1 to set the single-game school record. His 237 ground balls in 2016 were the second highest total in the country. Also named all-region and all-conference. He is committed to Belmont Abbey College (North Carolina).
•Hilton grad Ben Schrieber was named the recipient of the Nancy Wightman Leadership Award at the annual Keuka Athletic Department Awards Ceremony.
•Roberts Wesleyan men’s track & field standout Aaron McGinnis (Brockport) was the 2015-16 recipient of the Roberts Wesleyan College Men’s Senior Athletes of the Year Award. The senior holds the outdoor record in the long jump (6.97m), which he set on April 30 this season at the St. John Fisher Cardinal Classic. The previous record stood for 37 years, which was set in 1979 by Dave Stewart (6.94m). The jumper has also claimed the East Coast Conference title in the long jump all four years in both the indoor and outdoor championships. McGinnis is ranked fifth in the program’s outdoor record book in the high jump (1.96m), fourth all-time in the 4x400m relay (3:24.30) in addition to being part of the program’s fastest 4x100m relay team (43.19). In the indoor record book, McGinnis holds the record in the long jump (7.03m) while ranking fifth in the high jump (1.90m). On the track, he has been a part of the two fastest 4x200m relay teams and the fourth fastest 4x400m relay team.
•College at Brockport women’s lacrosse player Courtney Szczesniak was named SUNYAC Defender of the Year and the 2015-2016 Coach of the Year award went to Stephen Wagner. Szczesniak averaged 1.53 caused turnovers overall and 2.35 ground balls per game and was also named to the SUNYAC All-Tournament Team. Joining her on the First Team is junior attack Kelly Wall and senior midfielder Makensie Schuber. Sophomore Jessica Boddery and junior Cassandra Minerd were named Second Team.
•Brockport’s Jessica Craven was named the 2016 SUNYAC Outstanding Female Field Athlete after a first place finish in the discus with a throw of 41.39m and a second place finish with a throw of 12.86m in the shot put. Craven helped lead her team to a second place finish overall. Savannah Cook (shot put, hammer), Claire Fisher (pole vault) and Audrey Miller (javelin) joined Craven as First Team All-SUNYAC members while Samantha Turner (100m hurdles), Alexandria Kober (triple jump), Bernice Dumbleton (discus), Jessica Wheeler (pole vault), Autumn Swavely (javelin) and Marisa Gosdeck (heptathlon) were Second Team picks.
•College at Brockport sophomore Amir Rogers was named First Team All-SUNYAC in the 400m hurdles while teammates Jon Rogers (discus) and Whitman Oehler-Marx (pole vault) joined him on the First Team. Gary Messina (10,000m) and Kyle Cohen (pole vault) were named to the Second Team.
•The Golden Eagles baseball team had seven players honored as All-SUNYAC – the most selected in more than four decades when Brockport had eight players honored in 1974. Designated hitter Wesley Burghardt, first baseman Chris Davis, catcher Paul Ludden and starting pitcher Sam McCumiskey all earned First Team honors while second baseman Brett Sanders, shortstop Greg Ruddy and outfielder Dane Cala were named to the second team. Burghardt had 60 hits on the season, tying Brockport’s all time high by Nate Parrino in 2010, and finished his career with 184 hits, good for third all-time. Davis excelled during his second season with a .396 batting average, which ranked fourth overall in the SUNYAC while driving in a team leading 38 runs. In his first season with Brockport after transferring from Clarkson, Ludden finished second on the team with 15 extra base hits, 12 for doubles and three for home runs. In 11 starts McCumiskey only once allowed more than three runs.
•Golden Eagle freshman outfielder Amanda Yuhas was named Second Team All-SUNYAC in softball along with sophomore teammate Karleigh Eaton. Yuhas was a strong force in right field with 30 hits and a .370 batting average which was the team’s second best. Yuhas was also second on the team with seven doubles and one triple. Eaton recorded a .319 batting average, consisting of 29 hits including four doubles.
