Rangers grapplers open with victory

Spencerport wrestling finished the 2018-19 campaign ranked sixth in the state among large schools and picked up right where they left off with five falls and two major decisions as they trounced visiting Webster-Thomas 65-9 in their home opener.

Mike Nanna opened the match with a first period pin in 1:49 at 285 lb. Jake Scherbyn also had little trouble in his 145 lb. match, winning via fall in 1:48, and Silas Egenlauf registered a first period pin in 1:20 at 195 lb.

Seth Russo was trailing his 120 lb. bout 2-4 after the first period and was down 4-6 before registering a late reverse and takedown prior to pinning his opponent in 3:55.

Aiden Conn jumped out to a 8-0 first period lead and extended it to 11-3 after two periods before picking up a reverse and fall in 5:10 at 138 lb.

Sean Cullen (113 lb.) picked up six second period points on his way to a 10-2 major decision at 113 lb. Senior Mason Wersinger balanced out his scoring over each stanza in his 12-4 major decision at 160 lb.

The most entertaining bout was at 126 lb. as two-time Sectional champ Dom Vinci trailed 0-5 after the first period, but battled back with an escape and reverse in the second and a takedown in the third to send it to overtime. He registered a takedown just 30 seconds into the extra session for a 7-5 decision.

RJ Gaurino (99 lb.), Cal Russo (106 lb.), Jacob Zimmerman (152 lb.) and Anthony DelleFave (220 lb.) each won via forfeit.

“It was a good win; our boys wrestled tough in some squirrelly situations so we’re proud of them,” Spencerport head coach Dan Glover said. “I think their conditioning was pretty good considering it’s so early in the season and I think we came out on top tonight with a little help from the home crowd.”
