Holding, Gemerek help Blue Devils to comeback victory

Michael Holding registered a three-point game while Mathew Gemerek scored the game-winner and assisted on an insurance tally as Brockport defeated Fulton 6-4 at the Robert J. Smith Memorial Showcase played at Webster Arena.

Fulton started the scoring with a power play tally in the first period, but Brockport tied it 1-1 at 9:50 as Holding forced a turnover with the goaltender in back of the net and fed the puck to Tucker Trask fresh out of the penalty box for an easy open net goal.

The Red Raiders netted a shorthanded tally in the first minute of the second period, but the Blue Devils rallied with three straight.

Holding took a pass from defenseman Johnathan LoMonaco and scored at 7:09 to retie the contest 2-2.

Brockport then scored twice 24 seconds apart as Holding received a pass from Joey Mandel, fended off a defenseman and scored at 12:18. Jeremiah Rausch on the next shift finished off a give-and-go with Tyler Henshaw to put the Blue Devils ahead 4-2 after two periods.

But Fulton scored another shorthanded goal and another at even strength to knot the score 4-4 at 10:18.

The Blue Devils responded on the next shift as Gemerek scored on a high slot wrister after Henshaw kept the puck in the zone at 10:44. The two combined for the insurance tally at 12:02 when Gemerek dug the puck out of the left corner and fed Henshaw in the slot for the goal.

“It was definitely a struggle; we were up 4-2 coming into the third and they came back and scored two quick ones and we were a little bit down about that, but we bounced right back and ended up winning,” Holding said. “Huge penalty kill and that’s one of our specialties this year and we’ve worked on it a lot.”

“We kept them in it with penalties and our power play giving up two short-handers,” Brockport head coach Greg Schwind said after their third win of the season. “But I’m proud of how we battled back from adversity. We need to learn how to play with the lead and that’s something we are working on, but to have an answer every time was huge.”
