Coco Gauff named Hickok Belt® Award Winner for September 2023
Women’s tennis star Coco Gauff has been named the Hickok Belt® Award winner for the month of September 2023. Voting was conducted by a select panel of members of the National Sports Media Association (NSMA). The 19-year-old Coco Gauff, who turned pro in 2019, beat world No. 2 Belarusian player Aryna Sablenka in three sets for the 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win. With this victory on September 11, 2023, she reached No. 3 in the WTA singles rankings. By winning a Grand Slam, Coco Gauff has earned the admiration of tennis fans worldwide.
Other finalists for September in order of how the NSMA ranked them included: Novak Djokovic (tennis), Christian McCaffrey (football), Tua Tagovailoa (football), Tarik Skubal (baseball), Max Verstappen (auto racing) and Juan Soto (baseball) – tie, Christian Coleman (track & field), Canelo Alvares (boxing) and Mingee Lee (golf).
Gauff’s selection as the Hickok Belt® winner for September recognizes her as “the best of the best” in professional sports for the month. It also makes her the seventh candidate eligible to receive the 2023 overall award, joining Simone Biles, Carlos Alcaraz, Nikola Jovic, Jon Rahm, Mikaela Shiffrin, Damian Lillard and other finalists throughout the year based on NSMA voting.
