Student Receives Brockport’s Best Award

For Saving Classmate from Choking
The Brockport Central School District Board of Education recognized seventh grader CJ Piatt with a Brockport’s Best Award at its March 3 meeting for his quick thinking and courageous actions in responding to a classmate who was choking.
During lunch on January 21, CJ noticed a fellow student in distress and quickly stepped in to perform the Heimlich maneuver.
CJ was nominated for the recognition by Oliver Middle School teacher Shannon Howlett, who highlighted his calm response, courage, and willingness to act quickly in an emergency to ensure the safety of a peer.
During the meeting, Board of Education Vice President Dave Howlett praised CJ while announcing the award.
“CJ, your courage, composure, and selfless, life-saving actions in a moment of crisis represent the very best of Brockport, and we are incredibly proud of you.”
Superintendent Sean Bruno also commended CJ for the leadership and care he demonstrated in the moment.
“CJ’s actions speak to the character we strive to cultivate in our schools,” Bruno said. “When a classmate needed help, he acted quickly and without hesitation. His courage and compassion are a powerful example for our entire Brockport community.”
The Brockport’s Best Award recognized individuals who exemplify the values of the Brockport Central School District through bravery, service, and honor.
