SUNY Brockport Supports the Military

Dedicates Purple Heart Parking Space, Honors Military Graduates
SUNY Brockport continued its commitment to supporting military‑affiliated students and veterans through two meaningful celebrations in May. On May 1, the campus community gathered in Lot V near the Seymour College Union (SERC) to dedicate a new Purple Heart Parking space. Part of a nationwide initiative, Purple Heart parking spaces recognize veterans who were wounded in combat. Local veterans, students, staff, and administrators attended the ceremony, which included the arrival of local Purple Heart recipient William Fine, who became the first veteran to utilize the newly designated space.
The dedication of the parking space was made possible through a collaboration between the offices of Parking & Transportation and New Student & Transition Programs.
SUNY Brockport’s commitment to its veteran students was further highlighted on May 5, when the campus hosted its annual Military Graduate Recognition Ceremony. The ceremony recognized students who are contracted ROTC cadets, active‑duty service members, or veterans. The event was hosted by the Office of New Student & Transition Programs in partnership with the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC).
Graduates and guests were welcomed by Dr. Sara Kelly, Vice President for Enrollment Management, and inspired by a keynote address from Lieutenant Colonel Michael Sim, ROTC Commanding Officer and Professor of Military Science. This year’s honorees represented all student cohorts, with many preparing to continue their service beyond graduation. Their commencement ceremonies are taking place on Friday, May 15.
Together, these events reflect SUNY Brockport’s ongoing efforts to remain a military‑friendly institution. Additional initiatives include a dedicated lounge for military‑affiliated students and weekly “Military Monday” programming.
