Byron-Bergen Students Collect Over $1,000 in Coins

To Benefit C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association

On Friday, May 1, the Byron-Bergen Elementary School Student Council delivered jugs of coins to representatives from C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association. The delivery capped off a two-week coin drive to support families with a child undergoing treatment for cancer or a blood disorder. In total, the Byron-Bergen community raised $1,132.49 in pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters.

“This (fundraiser) is important because it helps families,” said Aston, a Student Council Member. “They could use the money for parking spaces because, if they’re in the hospital, they need their mother or father, and they have to keep parking. It adds up to a lot of money.”

Parker, another student council member, added, “The families will also be given gift cards to help pay for food and other things.”

The fundraiser was also a chance to learn more about money. Students learned that change is another word for coins, the flat, round pieces of money. They learned about the value of coins and enjoyed math questions and riddles involving change.

“This was a good opportunity for the students to see how small contributions can make a big difference,” said Elementary School Principal Kristin Loftus. “A penny might not seem like much, but when we all work together, we can make change.”

The C.U.R.E. Childhood Cancer Association uses the donated money to support Rochester families with gift cards, gas, meals, and parking passes for hospital stays.
