SUNY Brockport’s “Saturday of Service” Connects Students with the Community

Nearly 1,000 SUNY Brockport students, alongside faculty and staff, spent Saturday, August 29, volunteering with nonprofit organizations throughout the Greater Rochester community as part of the University’s annual Saturday of Service. SUNY Brockport President Dawn Meza-Soufleris also participated in the event, volunteering alongside students and members of the campus community.

Participants departed campus between 12:30 and 1 p.m. and spent the afternoon taking part in hands-on service projects at sites across the region. Projects included general cleanup, outdoor maintenance, painting, organizational tasks, and food and clothing distribution.

The annual initiative helps incoming students build connections with the local community while encouraging civic engagement and a commitment to service. This year, 76 nonprofit organizations participated, representing a wide range of community organizations and causes. Students worked in assigned groups, each guided by a Team Leader—typically a faculty or staff member or an upper-class student. The groups also worked alongside supervisors from their host organizations throughout the afternoon.

Participants remained at their service sites until 4 p.m., contributing their time and energy to organizations including local parks, schools, libraries, churches, community centers, historical sites, and advocacy organizations throughout the Greater Rochester region.
