GCV&M opens May 12-13

Help plant a pioneer garden; meet the new baby animals – lambs, pigs, chickens and more; enjoy a guided nature hike;  pose for a picture in Victorian clothing as part of a new gallery exhibit: these are just some of the many activities as Genesee Country Village & Museum unwraps its 2018 season on Saturday, May 12.

Rug Hookers of the Finger Lakes offers a Saturday “Hooked in History,” an all-day hook-in for its members with a display of antique and member rugs.

On Mother’s Day Sunday when all Moms are admitted free, there will also be a Moveable Fashion Show – a guided tour that examines garments worn by the women living and working in the various historic buildings.

The John L Wehle Gallery unveils two new exhibits: Victoria’s Closet – Fashions of the 1840s and Working Like a Dog. The Victoria exhibit showcases the clothing influenced by the young Queen Victoria along with a fun photo-op booth.  The dog exhibit uses art to look at the significant relationship between man and canine through the centuries.

Meanwhile, the Rochester Historical Society introduces a new exhibit entitled Yesterday’s Child in the grand Livingston-Backus House that once stood in downtown Rochester. It features 19th-century children’s portraits.

Other Sunday activities include a tour of village gardens in search of “spring tonic” plants, 19th-century dancing demonstration and instruction, a program examining how a new baby affected a household in the 1830s, period games, among others.

The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.  Saturday admission is $18 adults/$15 seniors/$10 youth/free for children 3 and under. Sunday admission is $22 adults/$19 seniors/$14 youth. Mothers and children 3 and under are free.

During this season, the Print Shop in the Historic Village will be relocated a few doors away to provide more space for demonstrations of 19th-century printing techniques. In its former home, the museum will introduce a newly renovated interactive Telegraph Office, harkening back to the mid-1800s when Hiram Sibley formed in Rochester what would become Western Union.

After being closed for a number of years, the c. 1833 MacArthur House will reopen following a major refurbishing. It will now be available for new programming and small gatherings.

Saturday evening concerts have been added to Celtic Faire and Fiddlers’ Faire events, while the Laura Ingalls Wilder Weekend is now a Wilder Weekend with new family fun and engaging activities. A new canine event will be introduced on August 26 in conjunction with National Dog Day.
