Monroe County Conservation Field Days

Students in fifth and sixth grade classes from Monroe County schools gathered at Ellison Park from September 17 through 19 to take part in one of the biggest education events in the area – Conservation Field Days. Organized by the Monroe County Soil and Water Conservation District, Conservation Field Days is an annual event to educate students about environmental issues directly from volunteering experts in the field. When students arrived at Ellison Park, they were greeted by U.S. Fish & Wildlife biologists, Seneca Park Zoo staff, and the Rochester Museum and Science Center – among many other organizations – to learn about some of the biggest environmental topics today; such as watershed pollution, renewable energy, and invasive species.

Over 1,100 students from 12 schools, including Brockport’s A.D. Oliver Middle School, made their way to the park, rotating between interactive demonstrations created by the volunteer instructors.

Soil and Water Conservation Districts across the state help organize annual Conservation Field Days like these. Support for the event is widespread and is provided from volunteer instructors, school districts, sponsors, and the Monroe County Parks Department.

The Monroe County Soil & Water Conservation District provides programs and technical services to help residents and communities protect and improve the water quality and other natural resources of Monroe County. To learn more, visit www.monroecountyswcd.org or call 753-7380.
