Winter college sports honors
•Nazareth women’s basketball senior forward Rachel Benedict (Brockport HS) was named as an honorable mention All-American by the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association – one of 40 players mentioned nationally in Division III. She recently completed her career as Nazareth’s number three all-time scorer with 1,624 points and number two all-time rebounder with 1,026 rebounds. She also ranks among the all-time career leaders in scoring average (16.1 ppg.), field goals made (570), three-point field goals made (162), free throws made (322), and free throw percentage (322-for-417, .772). She was a three-time first-team Empire 8 Conference all-star, was Empire 8 Player of the Year in 2018-19, and Rookie of the Year in 2016-17.
•Hilton grad and Cornell junior Yianni Diakomihalis qualified for the 2020 Olympic Team Trials following a pair of top-5 finishes at the 2019 U.S. Senior Nationals, hosted at the Fort Worth Convention Center in Fort Worth, Texas, December 20-22. He was scheduled to compete at the 2020 Olympic Team Trials before everything was put on hold. The Summer Games have been postponed until 2021.
•RIT freshman KhaVy Sangasy (Brockport HS) was named Liberty League Rookie of the Year at the 2020 Liberty League Swimming and Diving Championship. Sangasy won two individual titles taking home the title in the 200-yd. IM (2:06.45) and the 200-yd. breaststroke, winning in a school-record and NCAA “B” qualifying time of 2:18.56. She was also a part of four relay teams, one the 200-yard freestyle relay team, which finished first in a school-record time of 1:35.97.
•Byron-Bergen pole vaulter and SUNY Brockport junior Reanne Dressler was named to the USTFCCCA All-Atlantic Region team after finishing her year ranked fifth in the Atlantic region with a clearance of 3.50 meters.
•Binghamton University redshirt sophomore Lou DePrez (Hilton) won the 184 lb. title at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships to earn his way to the NCAA tournament, which was postponed.
•Brockport High grad Matthew Dambra broke the SUNY Brockport school record in the 200-backstroke, clocking in with a time of 1:57.74 and the 100-backstroke record in 53.53.
•SUNY Brockport men’s basketball head Coach Greg Dunne was named the SUNYAC Coach of the Year, while Jahidi Wallace, Tyler Collins, and Justin Summers collected All-SUNYAC honors. The team won the SUNYAC championship title for the ninth time overall and the first time since 2014. They finished 26-3 overall, undefeated on their home court, and advanced to the Sweet-16 of the NCAA Tournament before it was halted. Wallace earned his first career All-SUNYAC selection, being named to the First-Team. The sophomore led the team in scoring this season, averaging 14.1 points a game while shooting 55 percent from the field. Collins earned his first All-SUNYAC selection, Second-Team. The MVP of the SUNYAC Championship Tournament put up career-highs in several statistical categories in his final season at Brockport. He averaged 12.4 points a game and set career-highs with 336 total points, 106 assists, 83 rebounds, 50 steals, five blocks, and made 50 three-pointers. Summers closes out his collegiate career with his third All-SUNYAC selection, Second-Team. Despite playing in only 18 games this year due to injury, Summers had the third-highest point total with 279 points and averaged a team-best 15.5 points per game. He was top five in the conference with 31 blocks. The National Association of Basketball Coaches also honored Dunne and Wallace with 2020 NABC Division III All-District Awards; Dunne as the East Coach of the Year, while Wallace was named Second-Team All-District.
•Junior Julianna Taylor of the SUNY Brockport women’s basketball team was named to the 2020 SUNYAC All-Conference Third Team after she finished the season as a top 20 scorer in the SUNYAC and Brockport’s leading scorer with 288 points over 26 games. She also led the team in assists with 58 and was second on the squad with 26 steals.
•Roberts Wesleyan senior forward Emily Miller was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District First Team in women’s basketball for the third straight season. Miller was the team’s leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 13.9 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game, led the team in blocks with 31, and has 28 steals on the season. In the East Coast Conference, Miller ranks first in rebounds per game and 34th in the nation. During her career, the Buffalo native has scored over 1,800 points and grabbed over 1,000 rebounds.
•The National Collegiate Gymnastics Association Regular Season All-Americans recognizing the top eight on each event and the all-around and three members of the SUNY Brockport gymnastics team earned All-American recognition. Nikki Jackson and Jamie Sklenar earned All-American on the vault, while Amy Eck was named an All-American on the bars. Jackson was first in the region with a season-average score of 9.7250 on the vault. She had a season-high score of 9.825 and finished the year ranked fourth nationally in the event. Sklenar posted a season-average score of 9.6813, which ranked third in the region. She finished the season with a high of 9.725 on vault, tied for fifth in the nation. Eck was an All-American selection in the uneven bars, ranked third in the region and fourth nationally with a season-average score of 9.6813. As a team, the Golden Eagles finished the year with an 11-7 overall record prior to their season coming to an abrupt end. Brockport finished the year as the top team in the east and ranked third nationally.
•Ryan Romeo and Matt Schneider of the SUNY Brockport men’s hockey team were named 2020 SUNYAC Ice Hockey All-Conference. Romeo was named to the First Team on defense. Romeo ranked seventh in the nation among defensemen with an average of 1.08 points per game while leading all SUNYAC defenders in scoring with 26 points on 10 goals and 16 assists. He is also tied for 15th nationally in power-play goals with seven. Schneider was named to the Third Team after he capped his decorated career as the first goalie to earn all-conference honors since Todd Sheridan back in 2010. He finished as the program’s all-time leader with 30 career wins. He also holds the school record for career goals-against average with a 2.80 in 64 games played.
•Brockport wrestling junior Matt Caccamise finished the season ranked number five nationally, and sophomore Richard Knapp was ranked number nine nationally by InterMat wrestling. Caccamise finished his season with a 30-2 overall record and placed first in the 125-pound weight class at the NCAA Regionals to punch his ticket to nationals for the second consecutive season. Knapp had a 34-3 overall record and placed first in the 285-pound weight class at the NCAA Regionals to reach nationals for the first time in his career.
•Seven athletes from the Brockport women’s track & field team earned a spot on the USTFCCCA All-Atlantic Region team. Freshman Sarah Crockett earned all-region in the shot put and weight throw, while senior Mady Dibble (shot put) and junior Alayna Fredenberg (weight throw) rounded out the throwing group members to earn all-region. Pole vaulters Maya Reina and Reanne Dressler also earned all-region as well as Satin Holmes (60m) and Chanyce Powell (triple jump). Reina qualified for NCAA’s in the pole vault after setting a school-record with a clearance of 3.83 meters at the 2020 Brockport Multi in early February. She finished the season ranked seventh in the nation heading into nationals. Powell qualified for this year’s indoor nationals in the triple jump after setting a personal best distance of 11.82 meters on her way to winning the SUNYAC crown. She now has five all-region selections to her credit. She finished the year ranked ninth nationally in the event. Powell is now a six-time NCAA qualifier between the long jump and the triple jump in her career. She is a two-time All-American after placing seventh in the long jump at indoor nationals in 2019 and fifth in the long jump at indoor nationals in 2018. Holmes was making her first appearance at nationals in the 60-meter dash after setting a school record at the AARTFC Indoor Championships with a time of 7.74. She finished her senior season ranked 18th in the nation in the 60-meter dash. Crockett was making her collegiate debut at nationals in the shot put after winning the regional title with a throw of 13.70 meters. She also finished the year ranked fourth in the region in the weight throw following her toss of 16.04 meters at SUNYACs. Fredenberg finished the year ranked second in the region after winning a SUNYAC title in the weight throw. Dibble ranked fifth in the Atlantic Region in the shot put after posting a throw of 12.89 meters at SUNYACs, while Dressler was named all-region in the pole vault after finishing her year ranked fifth in the Atlantic region with a clearance of 3.50 meters,
•Five members of the nationally-ranked SUNY Brockport men’s indoor track & field team were named All-Atlantic Region by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross-Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA). Earning all-region status for Brockport were senior Tony DeYoung (shotput), sophomore Art Jordan (shot put), junior Oliver Kother (60 meters, 200 meters), junior Egypt Page (long jump), and junior Mike Panzarino (heptathlon). DeYoung – now a three-time indoor all-region pick in the shot put – qualified for nationals as the number one entry in the country after posting a school, conference, and SUNYAC meet record throw of 17.86 meters at the SUNYAC Championships this winter. Page entered nationals as the second-ranked long jumper in the nation, and he is making his first appearance on the indoor all-region team. He posted a school-record distance of 7.49 meters at the RIT February Invitational to qualify for nationals. Kother is making his second straight appearance on the indoor all-region team in the 60-meter dash. It is his first career selection in the indoor 200-meter dash. He broke his own school record with a time of 6.91 to take home the SUNYAC crown. Jordan capped his indoor season with his first all-region selection in the shot put as he finished the year ranked 39th nationally after his toss of 15.59 meters at the SUNYAC Championships. Panzarino earned his first indoor all-region selection after narrowly missing out on an NCAA bid in the heptathlon. He finished the year ranked 23rd nationally after posting 4707 points at the 2020 Brockport Multi in early February. He also earned the SUNYAC title this past season.
•The SUNY Brockport swimming and diving teams broke several school records during the SUNYAC championships. Freshman Oliver Dragojevic set two school records with a time of 2:09.48 in the men’s 200-breaststroke event and the men’s 100-breaststroke in :58.44. Matthew Dambra broke the school 200-backstroke record, clocking in with a time of 1:57.74, and the 100-backstroke record in 53.53. Nicole Orcutt set three new marks finishing with a time of 2:13.10 in the women’s 200-butterfly, 1:57.15 in the women’s 200-freestyle, and clocking in at 5:16.02 in the 500-freestyle. In the 100-butterfly, Bri Owens swam a school-record time of 1:00.14. The men’s 200 and 400-medley relay squad of Dragojevic, Dambra, William Tolpa, and Logan Gregory broke the school record with a mark of 1:36.78 and 3:33.18 respectively.
