The Perseid Meteor Shower occurs annually. RMSC says we are already in its active period. It reaches its peak this year between August 11 and 12, with the brightest meteors most visible on August 12. This year, the moon will be full during the most active period, which means only the most brilliant and fiery meteors will be visible as they burn through the atmosphere. If the weather remains clear, you can expect to see a meteor every five to 10 minutes. The Perseid Meteor Shower is renowned for meteors that burn vibrant colors as they descend.
This yearly shower is named so, because meteors appear to originate from the constellation Perseus. In reality, this is not where they are coming from. Around the same time each year, the Earth moves through a field of particles left behind by a comet in its orbit around the Sun. These particles burn up in our atmosphere as they fall. The Perseids are not the only annual meteor shower, but they are popular because of the great viewing weather that August often provides.
The RMSC offers these viewing tips:
•The best time to see the shower this year is between midnight and dawn on the morning of August 12.
•Dress warmer than you think you need to since stargazing does not require much physical activity.
•Do not stare directly at the moon – it will be full and bright.
•Enjoy the view.
