Questions surrounding ride are answered
The men and women volunteer firefighters of the Spencerport Volunteer Firemen’s Association thank the community for their generous support during the annual Firemen’s Carnival held during June 4 through 7 this year.
The annual carnival and parade have been entertaining the residents of Spencerport, Ogden and surrounding communities since 1937 with an array of rides, games, food and family fun and marks the unofficial start of the summer season.
“We are so thankful for the overwhelming amount of support that we’ve received from our community throughout the months and weeks leading up to the carnival,” said Association President Salvador Muniz in a press release. “We truly appreciate all of the time and effort that our volunteers have given us and we could not thank them enough for all of the work they do for this Association.”
In the press release, Muniz also clarified information about an incident that occurred on Sunday, June 8: While workers from Midway Rides of Utica, the carnival’s ride operator, were dismantling the Ferris wheel ride, one of two wire cable winches used to disassemble the Ferris wheel broke, causing the wheel to rotate unexpectedly. One worker suffered minor injuries, no one else was injured. Despite conflicting and erroneous news reports, this incident occurred almost 20 hours after the carnival had closed to the public and at no time took place during the actual event.
“The safety of our guests and our members is of the utmost importance and at no time was public safety compromised during the actual carnival. New York State ride inspectors visited the carnival and provided on-site inspections of each ride. All of the rides from Midway Rides of Utica passed inspection and there were no incidents involving malfunctions with the rides during the week,” said Muniz. He continued, “I am relieved that the worker from Midway Rides of Utica had only minor injuries and it is our wish that he make a speedy recovery. We will of course be speaking with both the ride owner and with the State as they investigate this incident. I would like to assure everyone who visited our carnival that this was a safe venue and we hope they visit us next year.”
