Spencerport Canal Days celebrates 35 years of community pride

The Village of Spencerport calls itself “Someplace Special” and that is especially true during one of the area’s most anticipated festivals – Spencerport Canal Days.

This year, Spencerport Canal Days celebrates 35 years thanks to help from many volunteers, local businesses and organizations. “There really is a community spirit here in Spencerport that you don’t find in other places,” said Ginny Swarthout, Canal Days chair. “It’s that spirit that has enabled us to keep this festival vibrant for 35 years.”

Many groups roll up their sleeves to make Canal Days possible. Spencerport Fire Department allows use of their grounds. Spencerport Rotary members keep all areas clean during the event. Spencerport School District provides school buses for shuttles. Local businesses donate funds to help finance the event. The local Lions and Kiwanis Clubs provide food booths, and many community members serve on the Canal Days Committee and volunteer throughout the event.

The party starts at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 30 and runs through Sunday, July 31 at 5 p.m. with events and activities for all ages.

This marks the 26th year for the Canal Days Car Show, a popular event that draws close to 300 cars that have dated from 1919 to the present. The show takes place on Saturday at the Ferris Goodridge American Legion Post 330 at 691 Trimmer Road, rain or shine, with registration from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. A shuttle bus picks up and drops off from Terry Taylor Elementary School.

This is the third year for the Wine Tasting Tent, which will include six New York wineries. Shoppers will delight in visiting crafters set up at the Firemen’s Field and numerous sidewalk sales along South Union Street.

New this year are carriage rides throughout the village, adding to the ambiance of what makes the Village of Spencerport someplace special.

Don’t forget to avoid the hassle of finding a parking spot and dealing with traffic. Shuttle buses will be picking up and dropping off at Terry Taylor Elementary School and Spencerport High School.
