Youth performers take to the stage

OFC Creations (Opportunities For Creativity) has two shows starring students of all ages this winter. “Madagascar Jr.” will be presented February 22 and 23 and “Rent: School Edition” will be presented March 8 and 9, both at the Lyric Theater, 440 East Avenue, Rochester.

“Madagascar Jr.” features a cast of 25 students ages seven to 12 from across the Rochester area, including Hilton. The program will rehearse for only one week over February break, concluding with three performances. For many of the cast members, “Madagascar Jr.” will be their first experience in performing arts.

Performances are: Friday, February 22 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, February 23 at 2 p.m. (ASL interpreted performance); and Saturday, February 23 at 5 p.m. Tickets are $10 and are available at www.OFCCreations.com.

“Rent: School Edition” features a cast of 36 teens ages 10 to 18 from across Rochester. Students began rehearsing in January and continue to meet twice a week up to the three performances in early March. Most of the cast members are experienced actors, dancers, and singers looking to grow in their craft.

“It is such a rewarding experience for both the artistic staff and students,” says Hunter Ekberg, director for “Rent.” “The show’s theme is multi-generational and we are diving into this iconic story in many ways that speak to these teenagers.”

Performances are: Friday, March 8 at 7 p.m.; Saturday, March 9 at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. Tickets are $12 and are available at www.OFCCreations.com and all area Wegmans.
