Now is the time to get ready for the winter

As the warmer weather shifts to colder weather, now is a good time to make sure your home is prepared and protected, says the Professional Insurance Agents of New York.

According to the Insurance Information Institute, winter storms caused an estimated $1 billion in insured losses in 2016. “Injuries and property damage can happen any time of the year,” says John Tomassi, CPCU, PIANY president. “However, now is the time to get ready for winter.”

Here are a few ways you can get ready for the cold weather, says PIANY:

•Trim away dead or weakened tree branches. These can snap under the weight of snow and/or ice, and may cause damage to your roof or clog the gutters which could lead to ice dams. Remove snow buildup from roofs, as well.

•If you have a wood burning stove or fireplace, be sure to have it cleaned and inspected once a year to help prevent chimney fires. Have your furnace checked annually to make sure it is functioning properly.

•Do you have exposed pipes? If you do, these could freeze and burst causing major water damage in your home. Wrap these pipes with insulation and seal any cracks and/or holes leading into your home. Turn off external water faucets and their water supply during the cold months.

“Sometimes making simple changes around your house can keep your home protected and qualify you for discounts from your insurer,” says Tomassi.

There are some insurance factors to consider:

•Have you done any home remodeling? If so, it’s important these additions are reflected in your coverage.

•Adding fire-prevention devices could not only save your life, they may also save you money on your insurance. Install smoke/carbon monoxide detectors outside every bedroom and in the kitchen. Test them monthly and change the batteries twice a year.

•Consider completing a home inventory so you’ll have a better idea of your possessions and their value. Keep a copy off-site so you have it should the unthinkable happen.

“Reviewing your insurance policy to ensure you have the coverage you need is crucial to protecting your home,” says Tomassi. “Call your professional, independent insurance agent to discuss your options.”
