Opinion & Comments: Nicotine Pouches are Not for Quitting Smoking

Governor Hochul has proposed a tax on nicotine pouches to encourage users not to buy them. Some people use them because they think they’re a smoking cessation aid; however, nicotine pouches are not FDA-approved for this purpose.

Nicotine pouches are small packets containing a powder made of many harmful chemicals, such as nicotine and various flavorings. The pouches are typically placed between a person’s lip and gum, where nicotine is absorbed.

These pouches are somewhat new, gaining popularity among teenagers and young adults. Since they were created so recently, researchers are still unaware of their short- and long-term health effects. Research must be conducted to fully understand the health effects these pouches may have. A tax on these pouches may help reduce their usage until researchers better understand their effects.
