Local Legion Post Earns Top Honors

For Membership Growth and Exceeding Goals

The Harvey C. Noone American Legion Post 954 received a prestigious New York State American Legion Department Membership Certificate at the Monroe County American Legion meeting on May 4. The recognition highlights the Post’s success in exceeding its membership goals and sustaining strong, consistent growth.

Post 954 currently holds the highest membership rate in Monroe County, a distinction that reflects years of dedication and outreach. In fact, the Post has earned top membership honors not only at the county level, but also across the district and New York State in recent years—an achievement that underscores its ongoing momentum and relevance within the veteran community.

Accepting the award on behalf of the Post was Membership Chairperson Wayne McConnell, whose leadership has been central to this success. A 15-year member of the Post, McConnell—at the remarkable age of 85—continues to bring energy and commitment to his role. Serving in recent years as both adjutant and membership chair, he has played a key role in fostering enthusiasm among veterans to join the American Legion and actively participate in supporting fellow veterans and the broader community.

Beyond membership efforts, McConnell has made significant contributions to the Post’s facility maintenance and improvement projects. His hands-on work has saved the organization thousands of dollars while enhancing the Post’s operations and overall environment.

A former member of the New York National Guard, McConnell served in the early 1960s, including deployment during the Rochester riots of 1964. Originally from Buffalo, he later settled in the Rochester area, where he built a long career in facilities management. He worked with both the Churchville-Chili Central School District and the Rochester City School District, ultimately retiring as a maintenance chief.

McConnell also brings a long history of civic involvement, including many years in leadership roles with the Loyal Order of Moose.

As Post 954 celebrates this latest recognition, its continued growth and strong leadership remain a testament to the enduring mission of the American Legion—serving veterans, their families, and the community with dedication and pride.
