Churchville lights up the streets while conserving energy

The Village of Churchville’s display at the Waste Management Open House held on July 25 compared power usage of LED lights over current standard lights. Pictured here from the Village of Churchville Municipal Electric is Stacy Stanton, Andy Zess, Ed Rivers and Ken Yoffredo. They constructed a display that shows a comparison between LED lights and standard lights. The old style streetlight vs the new LED streetlight are hooked into the light board. As shown on the left, the meter is registering the power used by the old style streetlight and the incandescent bulbs. On the right, the meter is registering the power used by the LED streetlight and LED bulbs. Over time the difference in the two meters is significant. The old style runs so much faster, which means it is using more power than the one that has the LED bulbs and streetlight attached.

The new LED streetlights use 60 percent less electric than the old style. The village is installing LED streetlights on North Street as a pilot program. The new housing development, Villas of Churchville, will be completely lit by LED streetlights. In an effort to conserve power, the village plans are to start replacing the old style streetlights with new LED streetlights. The benefits of LED streetlights include: reduction in energy costs by over 60 percent, reduction of CO2 emissions by 60 percent, maintenance costs are reduced by 50 percent, eliminates the need for multi-wattage bulbs in stock and installation time. The cost of LED streetlights has become more reasonable and the village is now able to purchase them for the same price as the old style, according to village officials.
