New interpretive panel celebrates Brockport’s outdoor art

The new “Outdoor Art in Brockport” interpretive panel at the canalside Welcome Center will be dedicated at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 14. The panel includes photos of 21 works of outdoor art in the village along with captions that name the works and the artists and give their locations and the years they were created or installed. Mayor Margay Blackman will preside at the dedication.

The panel was designed by Brockport Village Historian Bill Andrews, fabricated by Fossil Industries, and installed by Brockport’s Department of Public Works. Andrews suggests that many villagers may not be aware of the large collection of outdoor art on display in the village or of their artists. Andrews says, “We hope that this panel will help to bring our artistic treasures to the attention of village residents and visitors.” He points out that they include an early major sculpture by Albert Paley, the leading metal sculptor in the world,  and the only two major works of “Socialist Realism” art in the western hemisphere, the only gift by the Soviet Union to the United States.
