Organ grinders at the Transportation Museum

Trolley rides will be operating as the New York Museum of Transportation features a century-old entertainment tradition on Sunday, September 12, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Museum visitors will experience barrel organ music played by several “organ grinders” on their unique instruments. Enthusiasts of this early form of musical entertainment will be cranking out tunes from a variety of vintage wind instruments, bringing back the sights and sounds from more than a century ago.

Organ grinders were itinerant showmen who traveled through cities and towns, often with a pet monkey or other animal. On street corners and aboard trains and trolleys, they played their tunes for the coins donated by enthralled listeners captivated by the unique sound of the barrel organs.

The New York Museum of Transportation will offer visitors the opportunity to get an up-close experience, listening, watching, and trying their hands at making the music themselves.

Museum admission includes a trolley ride. The cost is $10 adults, $9 seniors 65 and up, $6 youths age three to 12, free for children under age three. Reservations are required and can be made at  www.nymtmuseum.org/summer2/.

The New York Museum of Transportation is located at 6393 East River Road in Rush, 20 minutes from downtown Rochester and easily reached from Exit 11 off I-390. For information, call 533-1113, email info@nymtmuseum.org, or visit www.nymtmuseum.org.
