Banana trees in Brockport?

After living among palm trees and tropical plants on the west coast for 30 years, Ray Trim moved back to the Rochester area to assist with his 90-year-old mother’s caregiving. Greatly missing his Palm Springs landscaping, and in an effort to bring a little tropical feel to his outdoor space in the village of Brockport, Ray planted three banana trees three years ago. Now he has 23 of various sizes, ranging from two-feet to seven-feet tall. He has given some of the banana pups, offshoots that grow from the base of the banana plant, to friends and neighbors. Ray says, “It’s fun and it makes people smile, which we certainly all need during these troubling and challenging times.” It’s a jungle out there in Brockport. In fact, Ray’s spouse, Lee, said, “By October, our yard looks like a mini Jurassic Park!”  The trees are the Musa Basjoo hardy banana tree variety, a perennial. Provided information and photos.
