Urban Bush Women tour to make appearance at SUNY Brockport

The Urban Bush Women (UBW) will make a stop on their tour at SUNY Brockport for two performances on Friday and Saturday, September 16 and 17, at 7:30 p.m. at the Hartwell Dance Theater at Hartwell Hall, Kenyon Street, Brockport.. Friday evening’s performance will be followed by a short question-and-answer session. Tickets are $17/general, $12/senior citizens, Brockport alumni, faculty, and staff, and $9/students, and are available now at http://fineartstix.brockport.edu, in person at the Tower Box Office, and by phone at 395-2787.

UBW’s Brockport performances of Legacy + Lineage + Liberation celebrate the power of Women(+) in an evening of classic works by founder Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, and a new dance theater work by co-artistic directors Chanon Judson and Mame Diarra (Samantha) Speis. These works give multiple dimensions of life that resonate in this time of reflection around equity and justice, and lift up Black lives in inspiring ways.

In this dynamic evening, audiences are offered UBW’s great sense of musicality, and reflection inside of empathy and joy, and a gracious invitation to respond to what they’re experiencing – and to leave the theater energized and inspired.

Since founding the company in 1984, Zollar has sought to bring the untold and under-told stories to light through dance. “We do this from a woman-centered perspective and as members of the African Diaspora community in order to create a more equitable balance of power in the dance world and beyond.” The company is now under the artistic direction of Judson and Speis.

As UBW celebrates its 38th anniversary year, the company continues to use dance as both the message and the medium to bring together diverse audiences through innovative choreography, community collaboration, and artistic leadership development.

These performances are made possible with funds from the NYS DanceForce, a partnership program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature. This UBW tour, which has several other performances around New York State, is a collaboration of several members of DanceForce, including SUNY Brockport, SUNY Albany, Alfred University, and Buffalo’s Pick of the Crop Dance.

SUNY Brockport’s up-to-date COVID-19 prevention guidelines can be found on its ticketing website, the Fine Arts Series Facebook page, and at http://brockport.edu/coronavirus. Compliance with campus protocols is required in order to attend any performances or events.
