A heartfelt hope to take root

It may seem like perennial winter but spring is taking root. You can see evidence in the growing buds and the return of the light. Sap is rising in our beloved Sugar Maples once again. It is a joy to venture out in February to visit our local maple syrup farms and savor the sweet taste of sunshine on our tongues.

However, this too could change.

Deforestation and climate change have a bleak impact upon our human spirits and on many of the trees we know and love. Did you know that it takes seven trees for every child born to supply the oxygen needed for a lifetime? You can thank trees for every breath you have taken so far.

Our Village of Brockport takes tree planting seriously; for beauty’s sake but health as well. Other towns and villages in our region are doing the same. This past year, decaying trees were replaced though several were planted for the first time. There are many more to come this Arbor Day. However, given that municipalities can only plant on public land, we need your help.

This month we invite you to take inventory of the space you have to plant. There are so many tree choices. There is a tree or two that are just right for you, whether you are a homeowner or local business.

No yard, you say? Consider donating trees to your local civic or religious organization. There are plenty of privately owned spaces in need of GREEN.

May your love for trees take root and grow deeper this spring. Together, we can truly begin to live in the loveliness of a canopy of green. Let us know how it’s growing!
