Tobacco funds to help state, local governments
New York State, New York City and the 57 counties outside New York City are scheduled to receive a total of $273 million in tobacco settlement payments on December 31, 2002 and January 10, 2003, according to Attorney General Eliot Spitzer. These payments are about 10 percent higher than the corresponding settlement payment made last year, and increases the total amount received since 1999 to over $3 billion. more

Monroe County tax bills redesigned
Redesigned tax bills will soon be arriving in the mail for Monroe County property owners. The new bill includes an easier-to-read design, enhanced payment instructions and a more precise breakdown of how tax dollars are spent, according to a press release from the county. more

Public invited to comment on proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter
The Town of Sweden Planning Board will hold a Public Hearing on January 13 to hear comments regarding the proposed construction of a 203,622 sq. ft. Wal-Mart Supercenter to be located on the south side of Brockport Spencerport Road, approximately one mile east of the Route 19 intersection. Engineers from APD Engineering, PLLC, representing Wal-Mart, will present the conceptual design. more

Sweden receives $19,450 in state aid for Quality Assessment Practices
The Town of Sweden has received $19,450 from New York State for maintaining the highest standards for assessment administration in the state, according to town officials. This funding comes as the town's 2002 assessment roll was confirmed by the New York State Office of Real Property Services as complying with the state's annual reassessment program. more

January 1 was a double celebration for Emma Stark - not only was it New Year's Day, it was also her 110th Birthday. Mrs. Stark also celebrated her wedding anniversary on New Year's Day. She wed husband, Frank, on January 1, 1916. more

Saints win 4th straight "Chow" tourney
The Churchville-Chili Saints defeated Spencerport 48-45 in the first round and Brockport 64-47 in the finals to win the 12th annual "Coach Chow" Classic girl’s basketball tournament held at Roberts Wesleyan College just after Christmas. It is the fourth consecutive year the Saints have won the tournament and their sixth championship overall. more

Hamlin Recreation offers Start Smart, a sports development program for preschool children ages 3 to 5 with a parent. This is a 6 week program, running on Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Parents must attend a meeting Wednesday, January 15 from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. and the children start attending on January 22. more
