Lake Ontario Coastal Initiative sets sail
Spearheaded by the Center for Environmental Information (CEI), the New York state north coast community renewed their commitment to the coastal waters of Lake Ontario with the release of the Lake Ontario Coastal Initiative (LOCI) Action Agenda. The LOCI Action Agenda outlines a strategy for remediation, restoration, conservation and sustainable development in the coastal region. more

Local municipalities receive grant money
Monroe County Legislator Richard Yolevich announced $88,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Funding to make multiple improvements in the Town of Parma and Village of Hilton, as well as portions of the Towns of Ogden and Sweden, as well as a portion of the Village of Brockport. The grants are recommended by County Executive Maggie Brooks and legislation has been submitted to the Monroe County Legislature, pending approval at the June 13 Legislature meeting. more

Squeeze at the pump to lessen, according to Reilich
Assemblyman Bill Reilich (R-C-I, Greece) said that very soon New York motorists can expect to see relief at the gas pump. On Monday, May 15, the state legislature reached an agreement to cap the gas tax at a flat rate, saving drivers four cents a gallon. "At present levels this agreement will save motorists $250 million," said Reilich. "If gasoline prices rise, so will savings, allowing consumers to place more money into our economy instead of state coffers." more

SUNY Brockport building renamed
On May 5, the SUNY Brockport Faculty Office Building officially became the Albert W. Brown Building as over 250 friends, family, faculty, staff and dignitaries gathered to honor SUNY Brockport's third president. more

Volunteers invited to sign up for Katrina relief effort
A team of volunteers from the Hilton area will be traveling to the Mississippi or Louisiana coast to help in the recovery program due to the hurricane destruction. The trip is planned for November 5 through November 12, 2006 and will be coordinated by HOPE Unites. Although church affiliation is not required, organizers would like the trip to be faith-based. more

propositions and board members

Voters in seven districts gave approval to budgets, various propositions and made their choices for board of education members in the May 16 elections. Six districts get nods of approvals from voters, one district's proposal is voted down. more

Chili considered for $32,000 in playground funding
A request for playground equipment funding has been included in the 2006 Annual Action Plan for Housing and Community Development in suburban Monroe County. The request specifically calls for $32,000 in funding for ADA Playground Equipment for the Davis Park playground. It was made by Chili Supervisor Tracy Logel to Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks. more

Members of the Endowment Committee of the Arc of Orleans have set September 8 as the date for "the best gala evening ever" in the series of Signature Series Dinners. The event benefits the Arc's endowment fund. more

Genesee Community College's Board of Trustees endorsed a new Associate in Science (A.S.) degree program in biotechnology. The program must be approved by the State University of New York and then by the New York State Education Department. If approvals are received, the new program would launch in September 2007. more

Hamlin college student chosen for NASA-related internship
Steven Seddio, a University of Rochester junior from Hamlin, will begin a 10-week internship with the Lunar and Planetary Institute (LPI) in Houston on June 5. He is one of 12 college students, or recent graduates, chosen for the very selective internships from universities in the U.S., Canada, and France. more
