BPD, Stetson Club award scholarship
As a way to encourage young people to consider a career in law enforcement, members of the Brockport Police Department, the department union the Stetson Club and Chief Daniel Varrenti pooled resources and offered the first ever scholarship this year to a graduating senior at BHS. more

Brockport recognized for Community Traffic Safety Program
The receipt of the AAA Community Traffic Safety Program award is a "testament to the Brockport Police Department's focus on community policing and neighborhood-friendly safety initiatives," Village Manager Ian Coyle said. more

Camp Abilities: a loss of sight, not of vision
Like any other camp, this one on the campus of SUNY Brockport has children, counselors, equipment, a spirit of fun and learning and a competitiveness driven by a desire to improve. Unlike most camps, this one is different; it has 56 children who are blind, 20 who are totally blind and eight who are also deaf. Does that change the activities? Not much. There is a sense of joy in this group, under the guidance of its founder, Lauren Lieberman. more

Spencerport officials share plans for wastewater treatment plant
Only a dozen people attended a June meeting hosted by Village of Spencerport officials in which plans for the future of the village's wastewater treatment plant were delineated. Many of those in attendance were from the Maida Drive area, adjacent to the facility. more

Celebration of 30 years in ministry
The Reverend Joachim K. Wilck was honored at the Lutheran Church of Our Saviour on the 30th anniversary of his ordination as a Lutheran Pastor. Offering presentations at each of the church's three Sunday morning services, the congregation presented Wilck and his wife, Debbie, with gifts to honor his service, followed by a reception held in his honor at the church. more

The award winning family event series promoting play as an audience education continues in Sagawa Park in Brockport. more

Discover great bargains at the Gates Library equipment sale
Every year, the Gates Public Library replaces some computer equipment, and the old equipment is offered to the public. This year, the sale will be on Thursday, July 27, from 4 to 8 p.m. more

Walking for a cure
Faculty and staff volunteers at the State University of New York at Brockport teamed up for a worthy cause and raised $2,193 for the American Heart Association Heart Walk. Employees and their families participated in a three-mile walk through the historic Corn Hill Neighborhood to raise funds to fight heart disease and stroke. more

Caring Kids Grand Finale
Brockport Ginther Elementary School Caring Kids concluded a year of community service projects with a parade. More than 500 kindergarten and first graders, staff and honored guests marched from the Ginther School to a program at the high school auditorium. more

Scientists in the making
The A.D. Oliver Middle School Science Fair 2006 was held May 25. It is an annual event that gives young people interested in science an opportunity to display their scientific projects to parents, teachers and the general public. more

AARP launches driver safety online course
July 5 marked the launch of AARP's Driver Safety Online Course. The online course presents the same information as the popular in-classroom AARP driver safety programs taught throughout New York state by 1,000 AARP-trained volunteers. more

The Sweden Clarkson Recreation Department hosted the Cross Town Cup Baseball Tournament on June 24 at the Sweden Town Park. more

Members of the Walk! Bike! Brockport Action Group gathered for a July 1 ride to the Holley waterfalls along the towpath. more

Winning season
The Orioles, a Spencerport Junior Baseball team in the Boys Major division, finished out a strong season. The Orioles played an undefeated 10-0 regular season, followed by an undefeated playoff run leading to victory in the championship game over the Yankees. more
