The Hands-On Horticulture Harvest Series presented by Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County kicks off on Thursday, October 5 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Genesee County Park Interpretive Center. Three different workshops, led by Extension Master Gardeners, educators and other community experts, will be offered in the series. more

Spencerport firemen respond to catastrophic event, begin process of rebuilding their house
Firemen are accustomed to fighting fires and helping the victims through the tragedy that comes from losing their homes and possessions. It’s rare that they are called upon to fight a fire at their own home and begin the painful process of rebuilding and re-equipping their own fire station. more

Celebrate Upstate is leading a search for original artwork for an art show and the cover of Celebrate Upstate's 2006 Holiday CD. Celebrate Upstate is a collection of local artists whose mission is to support and promote local businesses with emphasis on the arts. more

Little girls have big hearts
These girls from Girl Scout Troop 876 from Hilton and other members of the troop worked hard this past year making beaded bracelets. The bracelets were then displayed by the girls at the Big M in Hilton on June 3 where the girls received donations totaling $301. more

Master gardener training class scheduled
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Genesee County will offer a Master Gardener Training series for community members interested in learning about a variety of horticulture topics and become a certified Master Gardener after volunteering with the Master Gardener Program. more

Public hearing scheduled on agricultural district additions
The New York State Agricultural and Markets Law provides for property owners to request agricultural land to be added to an established agricultural district on an annual basis. Between April 28 and May 30 five landowners requested that seven parcels in Hamlin, Ogden, Parma and Rush be added to three Monroe County Agricultural Districts. more

Sign language students
A six-week introductory sign language class was held at the Sweden Senior Center. Topics covered were the alphabet, family, numbers, greetings, feelings, food, sports, senior center activities and happy birthday. more

Used tire clean-up scheduled, preregistration required
On September 23, the Orleans County Soil and Water Conservation District will sponsor a county wide used tire clean up. more

Hilton High School honors Vietnam veterans
Principal Brian Bartalo, center, accepts a plaque honoring three former Hilton High School students who were killed and missing in action in Vietnam. The plaque recognized the ultimate sacrifice paid by David E. Lemcke who was listed as Missing-in-Action May 21, 1968; Gerald A. Wilson who was Killed-in-Action August 12, 1968; and John L. Waugh who was Killed-in-Action December 7, 1968. more

Gold medal winners
Three local athletes won gold medals while competing for the Western New York Scholastic Volleyball team at the 2006 Empire States Games. more

Local girls win basketball tournament
On July 29 and 30, Mary Rogers and Jane Cripe of Brockport, along with Penfield's Margo Hetszke, won the Girls' 10 and under division of the Hornell Gus Macker 3 on 3 basketball tournament. more

Roberts Wesleyan Raiders fall sports previews
The Raiders men's team features three NAIA qualifiers, led by Julius Rono, and hopes to qualify as a team for the NAIA Championships. "Most of our top runners are upper classmen and have been running well over the summer and should race very well this season," said head coach Paul Kurtz. more
