Bees upset in quarterfinals

Tenth-seed and defending class champion Mynderse shot lights-out from the field to overcome a first quarter deficit and defeat second-seeded Byron-Bergen 54-44 in girl’s basketball.

The Bees built a 9-8 lead after 12 minutes on a jumper by Kristen Hohn, a trey from Sam Morgante, a jump shot by Lindsay Lovett and a lay-up by Abbie Kelley.

But Mynderse outscored B-B 12-9 in the second quarter, despite five consecutive points by Emily DuBois, to lead at the half 20-18.

The Blue Devils built that lead to as many as 11 points late in the third quarter, but the Bees used early fourth quarter baskets by Abbie Noeth, Lovett and Kelley on consecutive trips to cut the lead to just four points with 4:49 remaining.

It became just three points after a DuBois runner with four minutes left, but Mynderse hit a field goal and a trey in the final 90 seconds to pull away for good.

“They are a ten-seed this year and they were a nine-seed last year when they won it all and I will be shocked if they don’t do it again,” said Byron-Bergen head coach Rick Krzewinski. “It’s a one game and you’re done and, if the other team is on, you’re out.”

Kelley finished with a team-high 16 points and added five rebounds. Lovett had ten points, Hohn led with eight rebounds to go with four points and DuBois added seven points plus a pair of blocks.

Seniors Shawn Adams and Kaitlyn Amesbury played in their final high school basketball contest for the 16-3 Bees. The team returns four starters in 2014-15.
