Bees, Cadets, Blue Devils all win Section V wrestling titles

Byron-Bergen, Hilton and Brockport each won their Class BB, AA and A wrestling championships respectively by at least 60 points over the second place challengers in meets held at Avon and Gates Chili.

The Bees won four individual titles with three teammates finishing second to take the Class BB title with 233 points. Avon was second and Holley third.

Anthony Miraglia took the 138 lb. weight class with a 6-3 decision in the final. The Bees also won three of the four highest weight classes with Will Thompson winning via fall in 2:49 at 182 lb., Adam Walter taking his 220 lb. final with a 4-1 decision and Brendan Marsocci picking up a third period pin in 4:41 at 285 lb.

Cameron Brumsted, Chad Toal and Dakota White were runner-up at 106, 126 and 145 lb., respectively.

Holley’s Nick Shenck pinned his man in the 132 lb. final with just one second remaining in the first period while teammate Austen Vroman finished second at 285 lb.

In Class AA, Hilton’s Yianni Diakomihalis and Louis DePrez were named Outstanding Lightweight and Outstanding Heavyweight of the tournament as they and three other teammates won individual Section V titles in helping the Cadets earn 271 team points.

Diakomihalis improved to 46-0 in the tournament with a 17-6 major decision at 138 lbs. DePrez took 1:29 to pin his man in the final of the 170 lb. class while Mike Spallina won a 6-1 decision at 182 lb.

Austin Hertel won at 120 lb. with a 4-3 decision in the final while Greg Diakomihalis won a 3-2 decision to finish first at 99 lb.

Brandon Wilmot (132 lb.), Sammy DePrez (152 lb.), John Fuino (195 lb.) and Donnie Neuffler (220 lb.) all finished second. Cadets head coach Craig Gross was named Coach of the Year in Class AA.

In Class A, Brockport won their third consecutive championship sending seven wrestlers to the finals.

Cody Anders took an 8-5 decision at 106 lb., Troy Ferris a 3-2 decision at 126 lb., Carson Daly by a 9-4 count at 145 lb. and Jake Sweet a 3-1 sudden victory in the 195 lb. final.

Tyler Johnson (195 lb.), James Baker (220 lb.) and Mike Mattison all finished second.

Spencerport was third in Class A with 207 points led by champions Tyler Mitchell (113 lb.) and Mason Wersinger (120 lb.). Alex Rawlings, Marek Costner and Kyle Pittman all finished second.

The other local champion was Churchville-Chili’s Ty Raines, who won at 99 lb. with a 9-4 decision in the final to help the Saints to a ninth place standing.

Brockport head coach Mike Ferris was named Coach of the Year in Class A.
